Celebration of Light at English Bay

I might have posted this picture before, somewhere on the web, but definitely not on here. When I first opened the file on my computer I thought I totally messed the shot up. I only took one shot and felt like I didn’t get the settings right and lost lots of detail. But with a bit of editing I did get some nice colours out of it. Didn’t turn out as bad as I thought it would. Don’t you think?

Sons of Granville at The Backstage Lounge Part I (or a naked mad playing viola)

I don’t usually take pictures during live shows or similar events for several reasons. For one there are often many other photographers aiming at the same thing at the same time. We won’t necessarily be getting the same results but it still takes the excitement of shooting away from me. Though socializing and sharing the experience with other photographers could be fun too. Another reason why I don’t do it is because I want to simply enjoy the show without worrying where my camera is.

I’ve expressed my admiration for Sons of Granville in my earlier posts about them. These guys do know how to put on an entertaining show. That particular day things went a little crazier than usual and it must have surely been my first time seeing an almost naked man play a viola (not something you see very often).

I do enjoy taking their pictures and It’s always hard to pick just a few to post. So I’ve decided not to limit myself and have 2 posts. I’ll post Part II sometime later in the week when I find time to finish the rest of the editing from that day.

Reaching for the dark skies

I don’t own a wide enough lens so sometimes I have to take multiple shots and stitch them together to get what I want. It’s not quite the same but still a very helpful trick. This slightly complicates things for me as I often take 3 exposures of the same thing. So this technically is 9 shots layered and stitched together. With a lot of people moving around and no tripod this could get tricky. You have to hold your breath and make sure you don’t move a muscle, not even slightly. I’ve been shooting hdr without a tripod for a little while now and think I’m getting much better at this whole holding your breath part of it.

Vancouver library

It was a beautiful autumn day when I visited my friend who lives right in front of the library. Luckily I had my camera in my backpack to capture this beautiful view from his balcony.

Here’s an extra panoramic pic of the same view. Came out a little differently than I expected but still a cool view.  Don’t forget to like and share:)

Palette of emotions

This week has been a little off in terms of posting. I’ve been posting almost everyday during the weekdays except for friday, the day I usually post. So I’ll be making up for it by a late sunday evening post.

This is Thomas from one of the best bands in the city, Sons of Granville. They’re really good live and I would definitely recommend their stuff. I was on my way home when I saw them busking on the street so I stopped for a few minutes to say hi and take a few pics. I like shooting them because they are very passionate about what they do and it evidently comes out through the expression of their faces and their body language. Most of my shots that day were of Thomas and I couldn’t really pick one so I decided to do what you see below. (Click on the pic to enlarge or download a slightly bigger version)
